Chapman University’s seeks applications for a tenured Associate or Full Professor and Chairperson for the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) in Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences.  This position is located on our Rinker Health Science campus in Irvine, California and commences in August 2025.

The CSD department is associated with numerous school districts, private practices, and medical centers that provide services to individuals with communication disorders across the lifespan. This includes two clinics operated by the CSD department: the CSD Adult Learning Lab for adults with neurological communication disorders, and the RiteCare Childhood Language Center of Orange County for youth with communication disorders. The CSD department is seeking a leader who is experienced, dynamic, and collaborative; one who will build upon the excellence in research and teaching that currently exists. As a Master’s of Science graduate degree program, the CSD department is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) and the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Responsibilities

Successful candidates for the CSD chair position will demonstrate the ability to balance research, administrative and (limited) teaching responsibilities.

  • Provide strategic leadership to Departmental faculty and staff for management of curriculum, clinical education, scholarship, service, admissions, and assessment.

  • Interface with institutional, professional, regulatory, and community partners.

  • Strengthen the scholarly productivity of the Department by mentoring and supporting faculty in obtaining extramural funding and by facilitating
    interprofessional collaboration within and beyond the University.

  • Prepare and oversee the Departmental budget and advocate for Departmental needs.

  • Maintain compliance with accreditation standards.

  • Teach in area of expertise with teaching load negotiated.

The Chair of CSD is a full-time, twelve-month, tenured faculty position. This individual oversees administrative activities of the department that includes budgeting, accreditation and program review, tenure and promotion evaluation, admissions, curriculum, hiring and evaluating personnel, marketing, and program development.

The CSD Chair works closely with the Dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, and the Chairs of Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Marriage and Family Therapy programs to create an interprofessional community of research and teaching.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the academic and professional qualifications and higher education experience requisite to provide visionary leadership for the CSD program, faculty and students.

Minimum requirements:

  • Terminal academic doctorate (PhD, DrPH, or equivalent).

  • ASHA certification in Speech-language pathology with eligibility for California state licensure.

  • Robust, established research agenda, publication record, and extramural funding.

  • A record of excellence in research and teaching sufficient to be appointed as a tenured associate or full professor.

  • Evidence of academic or professional leadership.

  • Evidence of commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in teaching, research, and /or service.

Preferred characteristics:

  • Prior administrative experience in an accredited program including knowledge of CAA accreditation and curricular development processes.

  • Experience with accreditation processes, procedures and reports.

The salary range is $160,000 to $165,000 and will be commensurate with experience. This position is subject to final budget approval. A competitive start-up package will be provided based on the rank and record of scholarship.
