Post-doc: Mental Simulation and Machine Reasoning

Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial IntelligencE

The Reasoning Lab (https://www.khemlani.net/lab/) at the Naval Research Laboratory seeks applications for a position of Postdoctoral Fellow in mental simulation and machine reasoning. The Postdoctoral Fellow will join efforts at the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence to study how humans reason in everyday contexts, how they simulate aspects of the world around them, and how to build computer models of their inferential processes.

We're looking for applicants who have (or will have) a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, cognitive science, or computer science. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with preferences for those with experience in higher level cognition, experimental design, data analysis, cognitive modeling, and/or a strong programming background. Experience in domains of reasoning (e.g., quantificational, sentential, spatiotemporal, causal, explanatory, and probabilistic reasoning) is a definite plus. Postdocs will be hired through the NRC Research Associateship Program (http://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/rap/). Only US citizenship or green card holders are eligible for the program.

The Human and Machine Intelligence Section Section at the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence is devoted to basic and applied research in human cognition. The lab is interdisciplinary and focuses on cognitive science, artificial intelligence, cognitive robotics, and human-robot interaction.

Applicants should message Dr. Sunny Khemlani (sunny.khemlani@nrl.navy.mil) with a letter of interest and a CV. Review of complete applications will begin June 15th, 2021.
